Organization Background

For over 100 years, the mission of the historic Carnegie Library of Homestead has been to provide programs and facilities that enhance learning, wellness, and the quality of life within and outside the Steel Valley. Unique from other libraries, the Carnegie Library of Homestead includes a Music Hall, Library, and Athletic Club. The Music Hall has a seat capacity of 1,000 and attracts audiences regularly from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Many nationally recognized artists and bands perform at the Music Hall, generally, over 50 concerts are booked annually. With a collection of 35,000 materials, over 40 online databases, 24 public access computers, and 7,000 registered library cardholders, the Library offers many programs, services, and resources for the entire community. The Athletic Club includes several fitness-related amenities, including a pool, gymnasium, and full-service exercise facility. The Athletic Club caters to both groups as well as individuals. Currently, there are approximately 1,100 dues paying members.

The Carnegie Library of Homestead, also known as the Carnegie of Homestead (CoH) tries to remain true to its founder’s vision, while at the same time innovating new programs and services that demonstrate the flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit of an organization whose desire is to remain viable into the future.

The organization is comprised of approximately 25 full and part-time staff and a multitude of volunteers and community supporters that ensure a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere.

Job Summary

The Development Associate is responsible for assisting and supporting fundraising activities and operations, conducting the full range of activities required to seek and manage grants from foundations, corporations, nonprofit organizations, civic groups, and government entities. They will also be responsible for writing successful proposals for foundation grants, grant tracking and reporting for the Carnegie of Homestead. The position will work with the Executive Director in writing coherent, organizing, and compelling proposals, researching, writing, and coordinating the grant application process; management of proposals and maintaining a donor database. They will collaborate with team members in the organization to assist with other fundraising projects and help develop relationships with key stakeholders.

To ensure success you need to have experience in grant-writing, individual giving, annual campaign, and event-based fundraising initiatives. A successful candidate will balance priorities across different areas of responsibility, while seeking ways to improve existing processes and generate new revenue for the organization. Excellent writing and communication skills are a must, as well being a team player.

Job Responsibilities

Planning, Grant writing, Data Collection, Reporting and other Fundraising duties:

  • Maintains proficient knowledge of organization’s history and programs.
  • Prepare, assemble, and submit grant requests, including letters, proposals, budgets, and presentations.
  • Works with directors and accounting team to gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programs.
  • Responsible for effectively managing grants calendar.
  • Work with the Executive Director, Program Directors, Trustees, and/or other fundraising consultants to schedule appointments with foundation officers and other prospects, promote and arrange onsite tours for supporters (foundation officers, donors, sponsors).
  • Provide stewardship to current donors, including work with the Executive Director to provide verbal and/or written updates to individual, corporate and foundation donors.
  • Works with the Executive Director and Library Director to execute all aspects of appeals during the year. (i.e.: Love Your Library, Music Hall Seat Campaign)
  • Collaborating with the Executive Director to compile annual report data.
  • Coordinates with interns and volunteers to assist in the planning and execution of other fundraising projects (i.e.: events).
  • Performs projects and tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Research various types of grants available and the criteria to qualify for each.
  • Assists Department Director and Finance Team with pre-award budget development and performs post-award budget revision reporting for grants.
  • Responsible for the monitoring of grant activity.
  • Maintains records in donor database.
  • Performs projects and tasks as assigned by the Executive Director.

Education and Experience:
A Bachelor’s Degree in creative writing or related nonprofit field, or equivalent experience.
Previous experience with grant writing, fundraising for education, library, theater, or community centers a plus.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands: lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally, the job requires 60% sitting, 20% walking and 20% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes. Employee must be legally authorized to work in the United States and provide proper documentation. Employees are subject to a criminal background check, FBI, and youth clearance-check prior to the start of employment.
